Coconut Wax — And Why It Changes Everything
Share
Not all candles are created equal. The wax inside your candle determines everything: how long it burns, how clean the air stays, and how beautifully the fragrance fills your room. At Muna Candles, we made a deliberate, researched choice when we picked coconut wax — and we have never looked back.
The Problem With Paraffin

Walk into any big-box store and you will find shelves lined with paraffin candles. They are inexpensive, widely available, and aggressively marketed. But paraffin wax is derived from petroleum — the same source as gasoline and diesel fuel. When burned, paraffin candles can release toluene and benzene, both of which are recognised carcinogens, as well as soot particles that stain walls, blacken jar rims, and reduce indoor air quality.
For people who burn candles frequently — as a daily ritual, during meditation, or throughout an evening at home — these emissions are not trivial. Studies published in the journal Chemosphere have shown that paraffin candles produce significantly more particulate matter than natural wax alternatives. The candle industry has largely kept quiet about this, but consumers are waking up.
Enter Coconut Wax

Coconut wax is made from the cold-pressed oil of coconut meat, then hydrogenated into a soft, creamy wax. It is one of the most sustainable crops on the planet: coconut palms produce fruit for up to 80 years, require no irrigation beyond natural rainfall in most growing regions, and their cultivation supports smallholder farmers across Southeast Asia and the Pacific.
The burn quality of coconut wax is exceptional. Here is what the science and practice both confirm:
• Burns 10–15% longer than soy wax and up to 50% longer than paraffin, meaning more hours of ambiance per candle.
• Produces virtually no soot. The flame burns clean and bright without the dark residue you see on paraffin jar rims.
• Superior fragrance throw. Coconut wax has a naturally lower melting point and an excellent affinity for fragrance oils, which means more scent is released into your room — and it releases it evenly throughout the entire burn.
• Completely clean burn. No carcinogens, no petroleum derivatives, just plant-based wax and fragrance.
The Trade-Off We Are Proud Of
Coconut wax costs significantly more than paraffin or soy. This is simply the reality of using a premium, sustainably-harvested, small-batch ingredient. Our candles reflect this cost — but when you calculate the cost per hour of burn time, the value is genuinely competitive. And when you factor in the clean air, the richer scent, and the knowledge that your purchase supports sustainable agriculture, the case becomes undeniable.
At Muna Candles, we believe you should not have to choose between luxury and values. Coconut wax lets us give you both.
